ECO-LOVE

By: Valentina Gómez 10ª

Valentine’s day is just around the corner, and most of us are getting ready to give or receive presents, flowers, love cards among other clichés that make you feel the love in the air. However, the only one we are not giving our love to is our Planet Earth. But I don’t want to bore you with overwhelming problems, I want to give you tips to make your Valentine’s day more eco-friendly.

1. Let’s start with the basics; Valentine Roses. We all love seeing our significant other arriving at our door with a beautiful rose bouquet, and I’m 98% sure that you probably think that they are good for the environment since they are plants. Let me tell you, you are completely wrong. Valentine roses are polluting our world (if you want to know more about the truth behind the beautiful red flowers click here.) So, what can we do about this? You can buy you significant other locally-grown organic flowers or maybe you can try giving something different such as herb plants like basil or oregano.

2. Is there anything more delicious than eating a box filled with chocolates? They are the most enjoyable thing in the world. Yet, you are buying conventional chocolate instead of Fairtrade organic chocolates. And believe me that the difference is enormous. For instance, these chocolates are made only with cocoa beans that didn’t pass through any treatment with synthetic fertilizers, that hurt the world in unimaginable ways. Moreover, these are produced in small-scale farms that guarantee a sustainable production.

3. You probably like to read long and inspired letters from your significant other, or you like to write them and see their reaction when they read it. But have you ever stopped to think how much paper is used in one single day for couples to express their love? Well, I can tell you it is a lot, and that you can help by sending ecards or using paper with seeds inside, so it can be planted, and a new plant can be born.

4. Last but definitely not least, we can’t forget the present you are going to give to the person you are in love with;  this year you can try to buy something vintage. There are many wonderful things that could help your partner decorate their bedroom. Also, if you love crafts, you can make some DIYs, that can express how much you are willing to do for them. Or, you could just tell them “I love you”.

As you can see, expressing your love can be eco-friendly if you are willing to change some of your old habits. Now you know how to show your love to the most important “thing” in the world; The World itself.
