It all started on January 19th, 2017 in Bogotá, Colombia. About thirty-five girls from the Santa Francisca Romana school began a journey that would change their lives. They traveled to Monguí, Boyacá, with the goal of making a change in the town´s sport center without expecting a change in themselves. With enthusiasm and excitement, they took the first step to live an unforgettable and beautiful experience.

With the sound of an old song that teacher Jorge Luis Benavides played, students woke up at six in the morning to start their adventure. It was a week full of ups and downs, and a lot of work. From painting to washing dishes to cooking, the girls never stopped working. So much effort was made that the results were very satisfying. The community was very thankful for the amazing work the girls did, which is why they thanked them with a delicious dinner.

The most amazing experience was when the girls went to visit a retirement home. It was full of people with so much life behind them and experiences that taught the girls to appreciate every minute of their lives. Some of the stories the retired people told the girls were very sad and shocking because most of them were left behind and forgotten by their families, but they were still hopeful and looked forward to living every second they can. At the end, the students danced with them and the elderly people taught them their favorite dance steps to the traditional “Boyacense” music.

It was an experience that changed many lives and was worth living. Misiones will stay in many hearts and will never be forgotten.
