So:

  1. To avoid any possible confusion with North Korea’s capital, Pyongyang, the host city had to change its name. It capitalized the C from PyeongChang so there wouldn’t be any chance of confusion.

  2. The winter games were actually held in the same year summer Olympics were held, but that changed and now they alternate, one year the summer Olympics are held and the next one the Winter ones.

  3. In 1924 a man named Robin Welsh participated in the Olympics. He surprised everyone, because he was 54 years old! (But actually, a really good curling player)

  4. The winter games have a mascot! It is a white tiger named Soohorang, and its white color represents the snow.  About the name, “Sooho” means protection or shielding, and “Rang” is the middle part of “Ho-rang-I” which stands for “tiger”.

  5. This year Russia has been banned from participating due to the fact that they have been accused of running a state-backed doping programme for years.

  6. This year, the Olympics will be held in PyeongChang, which is by now, the smallest host city since 1994.

  7. This year, Hockey players will not be allowed to take part in the Winter Olympics due to a disagreement.

  8. North and South Korea will compete as one this year!

The winter Olympics are a common topic during this time of the year but, do we really know what is behind all this snow and gold medals? There is so much to be discovered, and actually more than a thing or two that almost nobody knows about this event. Today, I’m going to let you know some of these, because I really think it is necessary to know a whole lot more of this kind of world-wide events.  In order to make this, I’ll tell you 8 “fun facts” about the Winter Games that you most likely didn’t even have the slightest clue about.
